Cohesion, Coherence, and Thematic Progression in Arabic Tourism Discourse: Pedagogical Implications for Arabic Writing Skills

This study analyses the construction of cohesion and coherence in an Al-Jazeera Arabic tourism article entitled Sāfir ilā Tinghīr.. Sīmfūniyyah al-Maḍāyiq wa al-Wāḥāt fī ‘Umqi al-Janūbi ash-Syarqī bi al-Maghrib, and its implications for the teaching of Mahārah Kitābah (Arabic writing skills). The study aims to describe grammatical and lexical cohesion, analyse thematic progression in constructing coherence, and formulate pedagogical implications. A qualitative approach with a content analysis design was employed to examine a single article, with data collected through documentation. The data were analysed by identifying clauses and cohesive devices based on Halliday and Hasan’s theory, as well as Theme–Rheme structures and thematic progression patterns based on Eggins’ framework. The findings reveal that textual integrity is primarily established through reference and conjunction as grammatical cohesive devices, and reiteration as a lexical cohesive device. Coherence is constructed through a combination of constant, linear, and multiple thematic progression patterns. The findings also suggest the potential use of the analysis of cohesion, coherence, and thematic progression as a conceptual reference for developing Mahārah Kitābah learning materials. Future research is recommended to expand the corpus and examine the implementation of these linguistic findings in instructional contexts through classroom-based research.
