Plagiarism Policy
The Editorial Team of Social Pedagogy: Journal of Social Science Education recognizes that plagiarism is unacceptable and therefore establishes the following policy that specifies specific actions (sanctions) when similarities are detected using the TURNITIN application.
Definition:
Plagiarism involves “the use or imitation of another author's language and ideas that is so close as to be indistinguishable, and presenting it as one's own original work.”
Policy:
Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, no more than 20% similarity, and not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Any material taken verbatim from another source must be clearly identified as distinct from the current original text through (1) indentation, (2) the use of quotation marks, and (3) identification of the source.
Any text that exceeds fair use standards (defined here as more than two or three sentences or their equivalent) or graphic material reproduced from another source requires permission from the copyright holder and, where possible, the original author, as well as identification of the source; for example, a previous publication. When plagiarism is identified, the Editor-in-Chief responsible for reviewing the article will agree on the action to be taken based on the level of plagiarism detected in the article in accordance with the following guidelines:
Level of Plagiarism
1. Minor: A small portion of another article is copied without taking significant data or ideas from the original article (< 25%).
Action: The authors are given a warning and asked to revise the text and properly cite the original article.
2. Moderate: A large portion of the article is plagiarized without properly citing the original article (25–40%).
Action: The submitted article is rejected, and the authors are prohibited from submitting another article for one year.
3. Weight: Most of the plagiarized articles involve repetition of original results or ideas that have been published elsewhere (>40%).
Action: The article is rejected and the author is prohibited from submitting other articles for two years.
It is understood that all authors are responsible for the content of the articles submitted, as they all sign the Social Pedagogy: Journal of Social Science Education Copyright Transfer Form. If sanctions are imposed for plagiarism, all authors will be subject to the same sanctions.
If a second case of plagiarism by the same author is identified, the decision on the action to be taken will be made by the Editorial Team (Editor-in-Chief and Editorial members) together with the Editor-in-Chief Chair. The author may be prohibited from submitting further articles permanently.
This policy also applies to material adapted from other publications by the same author. If an author uses text or images that have been previously published, the relevant paragraphs or images must be identified and the previous publication must be cited. It is understood that in the case of review articles or tutorial articles, most of the material has been previously published.
Authors must identify the source of previously published material and obtain permission from the original author and publisher. If an author submits a manuscript to the Journal of Social Pedagogy: Journal of Social Science Education with significant overlap with a manuscript submitted to another journal simultaneously, and this overlap is revealed during the review process or after the publication of both articles, the editor of the other journal is notified and the case is considered a serious case of plagiarism. Significant overlap means the use of identical or nearly identical images and identical or slightly modified text for half or more of the article. For self-plagiarism of less than half of the article but more than one-tenth of the article, the case will be considered moderate plagiarism. If self-plagiarism is limited to the methods section, the case will be considered minor plagiarism.
Visual appearance, in subsequent journal publications. In the case of submissions that are translations of original publications published in other languages, authors must include the title, date, and journal of the original publication, as well as obtain copyright. Editors may accept such translations in order to expand the readership. The editor may select specific articles that have been published (e.g., “historical” articles) for republication in order to provide a better perspective on a series of articles published in a single issue of the Journal of Social Pedagogy: Journal of Social Science Education. Such republications must be clearly identified as such, the date and journal of the original publication must be mentioned, and permission must be obtained from the author and publisher.
The layout editor of the Journal of Social Pedagogy: Journal of Social Science Education is responsible for maintaining a list of sanctioned authors and will check that none of the authors of submitted articles are listed therein. If a banned author is identified, the layout editor will notify the Editor-in-Chief, who will take appropriate action. This policy will be published on the website along with the manuscript submission guidelines, and a copy will be sent to authors along with a confirmation email after acceptance of their original manuscript. A sentence will be added to the copyright transfer form to indicate that authors have read the Plagiarism Policy.
