Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policies

SETARA: Jurnal Studi Gender dan Anak recognizes that Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies may support researchers in preparing scholarly manuscripts. These technologies may be used responsibly as supporting tools, but they must not replace human intellectual contribution, critical analysis, scientific judgment, or accountability.

This policy applies to authors, editors, and peer reviewers involved in the publication process of SETARA: Jurnal Studi Gender dan Anak.

1. Use of AI by Authors

Authors may use Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies for limited supporting purposes, including:

  • improving grammar, language, readability, and clarity;
  • translating or refining text written by the authors;
  • organizing or restructuring author-generated content;
  • brainstorming or exploring preliminary ideas;
  • summarizing literature already identified and verified by the authors;
  • supporting coding, programming, or technical tasks;
  • preparing non-substantive elements of the manuscript.

The use of AI must not replace the author's own scholarly reasoning, interpretation, critical analysis, discussion, conclusions, or original intellectual contribution.

Authors remain fully responsible for all content submitted to the journal, including its accuracy, originality, citations, data, analysis, interpretation, and compliance with publication ethics.

2. AI Disclosure

Authors must disclose the use of Generative AI when the technology has contributed to generating, substantially rewriting, analyzing, interpreting, translating, or organizing manuscript content.

The declaration should identify:

  1. the name of the AI tool or service;
  2. its version, when available;
  3. the purpose for which it was used; and
  4. confirmation that the authors reviewed and verified the resulting content.

The declaration must appear in the manuscript under the heading:

AI Use Statement

Suggested statement:

During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [NAME OF AI TOOL/SERVICE] for [PURPOSE]. The author(s) subsequently reviewed, verified, and edited the output and take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the published content.

If no Generative AI was used:

AI Use Statement: The author(s) declare that no Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or AI-assisted technologies were used to generate substantive content, analysis, interpretation, or conclusions in this manuscript.

Routine use of conventional spelling checkers, reference managers, formatting tools, calculators, or other tools that do not generate substantive intellectual content does not require disclosure.

Where a software product includes Generative AI functions that generate or substantially rewrite manuscript content, such use must be disclosed.

3. Accuracy, References, and Research Integrity

Authors must independently verify all information produced or assisted by AI.

AI-generated references, quotations, facts, statistics, or other information must not be included without verification against the original source.

Authors must not use AI to fabricate, falsify, manipulate, or misleadingly modify:

  • research data;
  • participants or observations;
  • results;
  • statistical findings;
  • quotations;
  • references or citations;
  • images or figures;
  • evidence; or
  • any other part of the scholarly record.

Any use of AI as part of the research methodology must be described transparently in the Methods section in sufficient detail to support evaluation and reproducibility.

4. AI and Authorship

Artificial Intelligence tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors.

Authorship requires human responsibility and accountability for the integrity, accuracy, and final approval of the work. All listed authors remain responsible for the complete content of the manuscript.

5. Use of AI by Editors

Editors may use approved AI-assisted technologies only for limited administrative, technical, or language-support purposes, provided that such use does not compromise manuscript confidentiality, personal data, intellectual property, or editorial independence.

Editors must not use Generative AI to replace their own scholarly judgment in:

  • evaluating the scientific quality of a manuscript;
  • interpreting peer-review reports;
  • assessing research integrity;
  • deciding whether a manuscript should be accepted, revised, or rejected.

Editors must not upload unpublished manuscripts, reviewer reports, confidential correspondence, author information, or other confidential submission materials to publicly accessible Generative AI systems.

Final editorial decisions remain entirely the responsibility of human editors.

6. Use of AI by Peer Reviewers

Peer reviewers are prohibited from using Generative AI or AI-assisted technologies to perform the substantive evaluation of manuscripts under review.

Reviewers must not use AI to:

  • analyze or summarize the manuscript;
  • evaluate methodology, results, arguments, or conclusions;
  • identify strengths or weaknesses of the manuscript;
  • generate substantive reviewer comments;
  • formulate publication recommendations; or
  • determine whether a manuscript should be accepted, revised, or rejected.

Reviewers must never upload an unpublished manuscript, or any part of it, including tables, figures, data, supplementary files, or confidential information, to publicly accessible AI systems.

Peer review must be based on the reviewer's own scholarly expertise, critical judgment, and intellectual responsibility.

Reviewers may use conventional language or spelling tools to improve the wording of a review they have independently written, provided no manuscript content or confidential information is disclosed to an external AI system.

7. Editorial Action and Misuse

Undisclosed, misleading, or unethical use of Generative AI may be investigated as a publication ethics concern.

Depending on the nature and severity of the issue, editorial action may include:

  • requesting clarification or correction;
  • requesting revision;
  • rejecting the manuscript;
  • withdrawing the manuscript from editorial consideration;
  • publishing a correction;
  • issuing an expression of concern; or
  • retracting a published article.

SETARA: Jurnal Studi Gender dan Anak may revise this policy as Generative AI technologies, publication ethics standards, and national accreditation requirements continue to develop.
